My work captures the essence of the ubiquitous roadside hair salons that have become a fading memory in Hong Kong. These traditional businesses were once a common sight, but unfortunately have lost their appeal to the next generation, and are disappearing with the last generation of barbers.
In my art, I highlight the details that make these businesses unique, from the patina of the hand-painted signage to the improvised Hong Kong "air conditioning" with a fan suspended directly over the chairs. The footwear of the flooring, the quintessentially patterned “drag” bags, the fluorescent lighting, and the bags of choi sum hanging in preparation for the evening dinner are all symbols of the unconventional hardworking attitude of Hong Kong's locals, to whom the city owes much of its reputation.
I aim to preserve these fading memories and showcase the beauty of the simple work ethic that was once synonymous with Hong Kong's traditional businesses. Through my art, I hope to inspire others to appreciate the intricacies of these common yet extraordinary sights before they disappear into the zeitgeist of distant memories past.
